It's so true. I was a waitress for four years and a Christian as well. I know the people from my church don't leave good tips more often than not, and on top of that, they were often the pickiest people. As a Christian I try to use it as a ministry. I always have post-its in my purse and I try to highlight something that the waitress did really well in the note.

And for crying out loud, don't leave a tract when you leave a crappy tip. That's a bad reflection ya'll. A tract is not a substitute for a tip.

My husband and I have gotten free things because of our kindness to our waiters or waitresses. Though not the goal, it shows that saying kind things to those who help you out doesn't happen very often. At the very least we Christians should be known for our kindness and consideration.

Love this post. Thanks for putting it in.

I totally agree. Jackman is amazing. I do blame Crowe's singing for less depth-of-character. I think, because singing this type of music was new to him, he couldn't concentrate on acting and singing at the same time. Other than confrontation sequences, which I think he does well enough, his solo pieces ("Stars" and "Javert's Suicide") are emotionally lacking. I do think it is a totally worthwhile film, despite its flaws, and should definitely be seen.

Great review, Jacob.

I absolutely loved this film, and you've summarized it quite well. I particularly loved the moments when Jackman stopped singing and spoke his lines. He did so at opportune times, almost spitting them out which added good emphasis to what he was saying. It was audible bolding and italicizing.

The many close-ups were unfortunate. Though, they did draw us into the the misery of the characters, I think that emotional draw could have been heightened even more if it was more sparse throughout the film.

The low-point for me was Crowe. By the time of his suicide I was still not emotionally drawn in to his character. I did not feel a sense of loss of his character, nor did it truly ring of substitution as his last song wanted to suggest. I think part of this, or maybe all of it, was due to his singing which made his character quite flat.

Still, with its flaws, Les Mis was a fantastic film.

Thanks for your post. I was just talking about this with someone this week. In my own life, I have been artist and found the ministry part wanting more, then upon entering "full time ministry" my artist side was stifled. Tension is a good word. Only now after years of struggling with that tension am I trying to figure out what it looks like to embrace that & not deny either part. This has been timely in my conversations with God. It's also nice to know I'm not alone in this. Thanks!
